Order flowersMore than a third of Waikanae's 12,966 residents were 65 or older at the 2023 census, and the median age of 54.8 is far above the national 38.1. Mild temperatures and moderate rainfall have made it one of the Wellington Region's favourite places to retire – so many of the flowers sent here go to a grandparent, a rest home room or a keen gardener.

Eldernet lists six residential care providers in Waikanae:
Include the resident's full name, the home's name and, if you know it, the room or wing. A small arrangement that arrives in its own water is easiest for staff and fits on a bedside cabinet.
The Waikanae Lions Garden Trail is a community fundraiser. The 2025 trail ran on 25–26 January with 12 gardens open from 10am to 5pm, and tickets included entry to Ngā Manu Nature Reserve. Proceeds go to Life Flight Trust, Loss & Grief Centre Kāpiti and Predator Free Waikanae. A gardener here will notice what is in season, and our seasonal flower calendar can help you choose.
Ngā Manu Nature Reserve covers 14 hectares and protects the largest remnant of coastal lowland swamp forest on the Kāpiti Coast. Behind the town, Hemi Matenga Memorial Scenic Reserve covers 330 hectares of forest, and Pharazyn Reserve is rated one of the top 10 birdwatching sites in the region. The 2.4 km beach runs from the Waikanae River estuary to the Waimeha Stream, with Kapiti Island about 4 km offshore. For someone who loves this bush and birdlife, a native plant can feel more personal than imported blooms – see our guide to New Zealand's native flowers.
Waikanae Cemetery on Ngarara Road covers 2.4 hectares, including about 0.5 hectares of native bush, and was the first cemetery in Kāpiti to have a crematorium. Its gates open at dawn and close at dusk, and it has lawn and monumental plots as well as garden plots for ashes. When a service is held there, ask the funeral director or family where flowers should go – usually the funeral home or the family's house.
Whakarongotai Marae is the meeting ground of Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai. For a tangihanga, read our guide to condolences at a tangihanga first.
The Health NZ facility listed for Waikanae is Kāpiti Health Centre in Paraparaumu, which our sources describe as maternity-only. For full hospital care, Kāpiti patients may be at Wellington Regional Hospital, where flowers are not allowed in the ICU, NICU or ward 7 south – see our Wellington Regional Hospital page, and check with the ward before sending. The neighbouring town has its own page: Paraparaumu.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
