Flowers for Greytown (Te Hūpēnui)

Greytown, Te Hūpēnui, is a South Wairarapa town of about 2,840 people that claims to have the most complete Victorian main street in New Zealand. It has a special place in the country's tree-planting history: New Zealand's first Arbor Day celebration was held here on 3 July 1890.

Trees, orchards and memory

Greytown's Memorial Park has 117 lime trees planted in 1922, one for each local soldier who died in the First World War. The town was once marketed as the fruit bowl of the Wairarapa, with orchards on the west side of town. If the person you are sending to is a gardener, a potted plant or fruit tree can be a fitting alternative to cut flowers.

Christmas in July

Since 2020 the town has hosted the Wairarapa Festival of Christmas each July, a midwinter Christmas festival. Winter bouquets with a festive touch suit that month, and our seasonal flower calendar shows what is available in July. For the summer Christmas, see our Kiwi Christmas flower guide.

Care and hospital visits

Alden Palliser House at 186 East Street provides rest home, dementia and hospital-level care. Include the resident's full name and room on the order.

The region's public hospital is Wairarapa Hospital on Te Ore Ore Road in Masterton, with a 24-hour emergency department. The hospital has advised that flowers are accepted and that volunteers deliver them to patients; that guidance comes from a page archived in 2023, so check with the ward before sending.

Funerals in South Wairarapa

Greytown Cemetery is a lawn cemetery at the south end of town on State Highway 2, run by South Wairarapa District Council, with returned services plots and areas for headstones and cremation plaques. Its gates are open from 6:00am to 7:00pm. The only full funeral home in South Wairarapa is Richmond Funeral Home, based at 10 Richmond Road in Carterton, with an office and viewing room at 2 Fitzherbert Street in Featherston. The historic Pāpāwai settlement and marae lies just east of Greytown; our tangihanga guide may help if a farewell is held there.
