Sending flowers to Wairarapa Hospital
Wairarapa Hospital, on Te Ore Ore Road in Lansdowne, Masterton, has a friendly history with flowers. Its volunteers have looked after patients' bouquets. Health NZ's current page does not mention flowers, but an older page from the former Wairarapa DHB paints a welcoming picture.

- Local florists deliver the flowers

Flowers are accepted at Wairarapa Hospital: volunteers deliver flowers to patients and the volunteer "Flower Ladies" tend patients' flowers (Sept-May). Source is the former Wairarapa DHB volunteers page as archived Sept 2023; the current Health NZ page says nothing about flowers.
“Our Meet & Greet volunteers provide a warm and friendly welcome to visitors. They might help with wayfinding, locating wheelchairs, delivering flowers or offering general assistance such as calling a taxi.”
Volunteers and the "Flower Ladies"
The Wairarapa DHB volunteers page, as archived in September 2023, has stated that the Meet & Greet volunteers "might help with wayfinding, locating wheelchairs, delivering flowers or offering general assistance such as calling a taxi."
It also described a group called the Flower Ladies: "The Flower Ladies create beautiful floral arrangements and tend to patients' flowers. They work between the months of September and May."
Because this comes from an archived page rather than a live one, it is worth a quick call to the ward to be sure the arrangements are unchanged. The hospital's number is 06 946 9800.
Timing your visit
- Visiting hours are 2pm to 8pm, 7 days a week.
- Between 12pm and 2pm is quiet rest time for all patients, so visitors are not recommended.
If you are bringing flowers yourself, arriving after 2pm means you will not disturb rest time.
What to send
If the ward is happy, choose a compact arrangement in a container, and keep the scent light if the room is shared. A card with a clear name helps the volunteers find the right patient. For patients in a high-care area or in isolation, ask first; rules at many hospitals are stricter there.
Flowers around the Wairarapa
For deliveries to homes in Masterton, see flower delivery in Masterton. Nearby towns such as Carterton and Greytown have their own pages. Rural Wairarapa addresses with an RD number can take longer, and weekend delivery is limited in many areas.
Getting in and finding your way
- Health NZ says there is free car parking for patients and visitors at the front of the hospital.
- The emergency department is at the front, to the left of the main entrance, with its own access, and is open 24 hours.
- The hospital café is to the right past reception and outpatients, open Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 3pm.
- Bus route 200 connects Martinborough, Featherston and Greytown to the hospital about every 45 minutes.
Wards, whānau and special visits
Departments include cardiology, orthopaedics, obstetrics and paediatrics. A whānau room provides space for families, and language interpreters, NZSL interpreters via iSign and disability support are available.
Outside the standard hours, Health NZ says special arrangements can be made with the Charge Nurse if you are visiting children, or seriously ill or terminally ill patients. That is worth remembering if you are sending flowers to someone whose family is keeping a long vigil: a call to 06 946 9800 (or 0800 946 9800) will tell you what suits the ward.
