Sending flowers in New Zealand, with the local details sorted

The hard part of sending flowers is rarely the bouquet. It is knowing whether the ward accepts them, which funeral home is handling the service, or why your order to a farm address with an RD number needs an extra day. We have collected those details for towns from Kaitāia to Invercargill, checked against councils, Health New Zealand and the facilities themselves.

Before you send to a patient, look up the hospital flower rules: Christchurch Hospital does not allow flowers at all, and many others keep them out of intensive care. For a funeral or tangihanga, our funeral flower guide covers where to send and what to write.

Planning ahead? The NZ flower calendar lists Mother’s Day, Matariki, Father’s Day and the rest, and what’s in season explains why roses cost more in a Kiwi summer.

From Cape Reinga to Bluff, flowers made up close to home.

Questions we hear a lot

Can I send flowers to someone in hospital?
Usually, but not everywhere. Christchurch Hospital does not allow flowers at all, and many hospitals keep them out of intensive care, burns, cancer and neonatal units. Our hospital pages quote each published rule, and when in doubt you can send the flowers home instead.
When is Mother’s Day in New Zealand?
The second Sunday in May. It is the busiest flower day of the year, and some florists stop taking orders days before, so order by the Wednesday or Thursday.
Can flowers be delivered to a rural address?
Yes, in most areas, but rural addresses with an RD number can take longer and weekend delivery is limited. Write the address exactly as the recipient does, with the RD number and postcode.
Where should funeral flowers go?
To the funeral director or chapel before the service, or to the family home afterwards. The death notice usually says where messages and flowers should be sent.
Can I send flowers into New Zealand from overseas?
Yes. Order through a florist service that delivers in New Zealand and a local florist makes up the bouquet, so the flowers never cross the border.
Can the card go without my name?
Yes. You write the card message when you order, and you can leave your name off if you want it to be a surprise.
