Sending flowers to Auckland – Tāmaki Makaurau

Auckland is home to around 1.5 million people, so a bouquet sent here could be heading to a high-rise apartment in the central city, a family home on the North Shore, a hospital bed in Ōtāhuhu or a bach on the west coast. We have gathered what is useful to know before you order, from the hospitals that limit flowers to the gardens that show what grows well in the city.

Auckland is a single council area that stretches from the Hibiscus Coast to the southern edge of the region, and it includes the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. For a wider view, see our Auckland region page.

Before you send flowers to an Auckland hospital

The city's large public hospitals do not all handle flowers the same way, so it pays to check where the patient is.

  • Middlemore Hospital does not allow fresh flowers or potted plants in the National Burn Centre, because pollen, water and soil can carry infection. No rule is published for the other wards, and the hospital has an on-site florist selling gifts for patients and staff. Check with the ward before sending.
  • North Shore Hospital publishes infection-control guidance asking visitors not to bring flowers or plants into the hospital. A delivery to the patient's home after discharge is usually the better choice.
  • Auckland City Hospital and Starship Children's Health are the other big public hospitals in the city. We have not found a published flower rule for them, so ring the ward before ordering.

Whatever the hospital, include the patient's full name and ward on the order.

Roses and camellias: what Aucklanders grow

The city has some of the country's best-known public gardens, and they are a good guide to the flowers locals love.

  • Parnell Rose Gardens (officially Dove-Myer Robinson Park) has more than 5,000 roses, and its Nancy Steen Garden keeps heritage varieties. The Parnell Festival of Roses is held there each November; in 2026 it falls on Sunday 8 November, run together with the Auckland Rose Society.
  • Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa opened in 1982 and covers 64 hectares with more than 10,000 plants, including rose, camellia and magnolia gardens. Its camellia collection of 62 species and 487 cultivars holds International Camellia Garden of Excellence status, first awarded in 2012.
  • The Auckland Domain, created in 1843, is the city's oldest park. Its Wintergardens glasshouses date from 1921 and 1928, and there is a fernery in an old scoria quarry.

The Ellerslie Flower Show also started in Auckland, at Ellerslie Racecourse in 1994, before it moved to Hagley Park in Christchurch in 2009.

Sympathy flowers and Auckland's cemeteries

If you are sending flowers for a funeral or to mark a loss, the service may be at one of the city's larger cemeteries and crematoria:

  • Waikumete Cemetery and Waikumete Crematorium
  • Purewa Cemetery and Purewa Crematorium
  • North Shore Memorial Park
  • Manukau Memorial Gardens

Flowers for a funeral are normally sent to the funeral home or the family's home rather than to the cemetery itself. Our guide to funeral and sympathy flowers explains what is customary, and our guide to Samoan, Tongan and Cook Islands funerals covers Pasifika customs.

Island and rural addresses in the Auckland region

Not every Auckland address is suburban. Rural properties use an RD number, and the mailtown on a rural address is where the delivery round is based, not where the house is. NZ Post's own example is Piha: rural addresses there are serviced from New Lynn, so the address ends in New Lynn 0772. Copy the address exactly as the recipient writes it.

The Gulf islands need extra thought. Freight to Waiheke Island travels by ferry, and Great Barrier Island lies about 100 km north-east of the central city. Allow more time for both, and order early in the day.
