Sending flowers around the Wellington region

The Wellington region, Te Whanganui-a-Tara, has about 543,400 people (Stats NZ estimate, June 2025). Its seat is the capital, Wellington, but the region also takes in the Hutt Valley, Porirua, the Kāpiti Coast and the Wairarapa. Hospital flower rules here are among the clearest in the country, which makes it easier to get flowers to a patient.

The capital and the Hutt Valley

Wellington's Botanic Garden ki Paekākā, established in 1868, includes the Lady Norwood Rose Garden, with 110 beds of roses in concentric circles around a fountain. In Lower Hutt, Percy Scenic Reserve in Maungaraki is a botanic garden of native plants. Upper Hutt's Aston Norwood Gardens in Kaitoke has about 400 cherry blossom trees and a Blossom Valley festival each spring.

Clear rules for patients

  • Wellington Regional Hospital: send flowers to 49 Riddiford Street, Newtown, marked with the patient's name and ward. Flowers are not allowed in ICU, NICU or ward 7 south.
  • Hutt Hospital has a florist inside the main entrance and publishes no ward restrictions.
  • Kenepuru Community Hospital in Porirua: send to 16 Hospital Drive, marked with name and ward.
  • Wairarapa Hospital in Masterton: volunteers have delivered flowers to patients, according to an archived page, so check with the ward first.

Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast

Porirua's Whenua Tapu Cemetery has held Green Flag status for four consecutive years as of November 2024, and its chapel and crematorium reopened in 2021 after strengthening. On the Kāpiti Coast, Awa Tapu Cemetery on Valley Road in Paraparaumu has a crematorium. Waikanae, Ōtaki, Ōtaki Beach and Paekākāriki are also served. For funeral flowers, send them to the funeral director or the family's home; our sympathy flowers guide has more.

Daffodils and lime trees in the Wairarapa

Carterton calls itself New Zealand's daffodil capital and holds a Daffodil Festival on the second Sunday in September. Greytown held New Zealand's first Arbor Day celebration in 1890, and its Memorial Park has 117 lime trees planted in 1922, one for each local soldier who died in the First World War. Masterton, Featherston and Martinborough are also covered.

Rural Wairarapa and Kāpiti addresses

Outside the towns, addresses may use an RD number in place of a suburb, followed by the mailtown and postcode. The mailtown is where the rural round is based, not necessarily the nearest village. Since June 2024, NZ Post has stopped Saturday parcel deliveries to most rural addresses, a good reminder that weekend delivery is limited in many rural areas. Order early in the week and include a phone number.

Florists also deliver to smaller places such as Martinborough, Paekākāriki.
