Ocean View Residential Care, at 56–58 Marine Parade, is the only aged-care home Eldernet lists at Ōtaki Beach. When you send flowers to a resident, include their full name and the home's name, and choose an arrangement that fits on a bedside table. A vase arrangement is kinder to staff than a loose bouquet that needs trimming.
The Ōtaki Kite Festival is held on the beach over a weekend in February. The 2020 festival, on 8–9 February, was the eighth annual event; it drew more than 20,000 people and kite flyers from the Netherlands, England, the United States and Australia. A month later, the Māoriland Film Festival fills Ōtaki town; it began in 2014, is held every March, and the 2027 festival is scheduled for 16–21 March. On festival weekends, add the recipient's phone number to your order in case they are out on the beach.
A cairn opposite 224 Marine Parade commemorates the October 1878 wrecks of the barque Felixstowe and the immigrant ship City of Auckland. Just south of the settlement, the Ōtaki River reaches the sea after running about 65 km from the Tararua Range; Ōtaki Forks, upriver, is the start of several tramping tracks. Inland, the land around Ōtaki is market gardens and lifestyle blocks, so check whether your recipient has a rural (RD) address – those can take longer.
Ōtaki Cemetery, at the end of Anzac Road in Ōtaki town, covers 3.9 ha of semi-rural land. It is the oldest cemetery in Kāpiti and the first in the district to offer natural burials; gates open dawn to dusk. Te Awahou Funeral Services, founded in Foxton in 2017, has an Ōtaki office at 202–204 Main Highway. Ask the funeral director where flowers should go.
Rangiātea Church stands at Raukawa Marae, whose hapū include Ngāti Korokī, Ngāti Maiotaki and Ngāti Pare. The original church was completed in 1851, burnt down in 1995 and completely rebuilt by 2003. Te Wānanga o Raukawa, a tikanga Māori university, has been in Ōtaki since 1981. For a tangihanga, see our tangihanga guide.
The nearest Health NZ facility is the maternity-only Kāpiti Health Centre in Paraparaumu, about 21 km away in a straight line. Full hospitals are Palmerston North Hospital (about 62 km) and Wellington Hospital (about 69 km). Both have flower rules:
Check with the ward before sending to either, or send to the patient's home for when they return. For deliveries in town, see our Ōtaki page.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Ōtaki Beach.
