The Waikato region has about 532,100 people (Stats NZ estimate, June 2025) and takes in towns from Pōkeno and Tuakau to Taupō and Tūrangi, as well as the Coromandel Peninsula. Hamilton is the regional seat and the biggest city by far. With 24 towns on our list, it is our longest regional list, and the right approach depends a lot on where your flowers are going.

Hamilton and the rose towns of Waipā

Hamilton is home to Hamilton Gardens, a 54-hectare park on the banks of the Waikato River, whose collections include the Rogers Rose Garden and Hammond Camellia Garden. South of the city, Te Awamutu is known as "The Rose Town of New Zealand" for the rose gardens in its town centre, opened in 1969. Cambridge, "The Town of Trees & Champions", was named New Zealand's Most Beautiful Large Town in 2019, and Kihikihi and Pirongia are close by.

Farming and horse country

The area around Morrinsville has the highest concentration of dairy cattle in New Zealand, and both Cambridge and Matamata are known for thoroughbred horses. Te Kauwhata is surrounded by dairy farms, drystock holdings and horticulture. Recipients on farms may have rural addresses. NZ Post's format puts "RD" and a number where the suburb would go, and since January 2024 rural addresses in national address data also carry a major place name, such as Cambridge, after the locality. Use the address exactly as the recipient gives it, and allow extra time.

Thames, Whitianga and the Coromandel

On the peninsula, Thames grew from two gold-rush settlements, and its hospital, built in the 1860s, is the oldest still operating in New Zealand. Whitianga and Whangamatā have their own pages, and Coromandel and Tairua are also served. At New Year, Whangamatā's population swells to over 25,000, so expect busy roads and high demand around the holidays and order early. Waihi, Paeroa and Ngatea are on the Hauraki side.

Taupō, Tūrangi and the south

Taupō has severe winter frosts, and the Waipahihi Botanical Gardens are in the suburb of Waipahihi. Kinloch is also served. Tūrangi, on the Tongariro River, has streets lined with brilliant foliage in autumn. Elsewhere, Tokoroa, Putāruru, Te Kūiti and Ōtorohanga, the "Kiwiana Town" and gateway to the Waitomo Caves, all have their own pages.

Patients at Waikato Hospital

Waikato Hospital in Hamilton does not allow flowers in its Critical Care unit (ICU and HDU), because patients with fragile lungs are often present. There is a florist and gift shop on Level 1 of the Meade Clinical Centre. No rule has been published for other wards, so check with the ward before sending.

Winter and summer care

Inland towns such as Taupō get hard frosts, while Raglan on the coast rarely gets more than a degree of frost. In winter, keep flowers away from cold windows; in summer, our guide to making flowers last helps.

Florists also deliver to smaller places such as Coromandel, Tairua, Ngatea, Pirongia, Kinloch.
