Flowers for Whitianga and Mercury Bay

Whitianga is the main town on Mercury Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula, with about 6,140 residents. Its original name is Te Whitianga o Kupe, meaning Kupe's crossing place, and the 1838 stone wharf on the east bank is the oldest remaining wharf in New Zealand. Here is what is useful when you send flowers here.

Two sides of the harbour

A passenger ferry crosses from Whitianga to Ferry Landing in two minutes, but by road the trip around Whitianga Harbour takes 45 minutes. That matters for deliveries: an address at Ferry Landing or on the far side of the harbour is a much longer drive than it looks on a map. Give the full address and a phone number, and allow extra time.

Aged care in Whitianga

Whitianga Lifecare at 6 Halligan Road provides aged residential care. When sending flowers to a resident, include their full name and, if you know it, their room. A compact arrangement in its own vase is easiest for staff and residents. If you are unsure what is suitable, for example for someone in hospital-level care, ring the home before you order.

Mercury Bay cemeteries

Two open Thames-Coromandel District Council cemeteries serve the area:

  • Mercury Bay Cemetery, 1138 Purangi Road, Ferry Landing, across the harbour from the town
  • Kaimarama Cemetery, 2 Hopetui Road, in the separate locality of Kaimarama, about 5 km south of Whitianga

Funeral flowers are best sent to the funeral home or the family home. Our sympathy flower guide explains what to write on the card.

Scallops, beaches and summer

The Whitianga Scallop Festival is held every September. Buffalo Beach is named after HMS Buffalo, which was wrecked in Mercury Bay, and her anchor stands on a monument at the beach. In summer, many homes here are holiday houses, so check that the recipient will be there and add a note about a shady spot. Our flower care guide helps flowers last in the heat. For other Coromandel towns, see Whangamatā or our Waikato region page.

Which side of the harbour?

Before ordering, ask the recipient whether they live in the town itself, at Ferry Landing or out at Kaimarama. Each needs a different route, and the drive around the harbour takes 45 minutes. A note with the exact address and a phone number helps the florist plan.
