Order flowersPutāruru lies on State Highway 1 on the Oraka Stream, 65 km south-east of Hamilton, on the western side of the Mamaku Ranges in the upper Waihou basin. Its economy is based on farming, forestry and timber, and commercial Pinus radiata planting nearby began in the 1920s. About 4,560 people live in the urban area (June 2025 estimate). Since 1989 the town has been part of South Waikato District in the Waikato region, with the council seat in Tokoroa and a service centre in Putāruru.

The name comes from "Te Puta a Ruru" – the exit of Ruru – after a servant who escaped through the forest after witnessing the killing of Korekore. Two Ngāti Raukawa marae serve the Putāruru area: Mangakāretu Marae (Ngā Hau e Maha meeting house) and Whakaaratamaiti Marae (Korōria meeting house). If you are sending condolences for a tangihanga at either marae, our guide to tangihanga and condolences explains what is customary.
Both provide aged residential care. For a resident, choose a compact arrangement already in a vase, or a small potted plant, and include the resident's full name. If they are unwell, call the home first. Our guide to hay fever and flowers suggests gentler choices for shared spaces.
South Waikato District Council runs two cemeteries in Putāruru, one on State Highway 1 and one on Domain Road, both open to the public seven days a week. For a funeral, send flowers to the funeral director or service venue rather than the cemetery, with the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service. Our funeral flower etiquette guide helps with wording.
For farm properties, put the RD number where a suburb would normally appear, written "RD 1" with no dots, and copy the mailtown and postcode exactly as the recipient uses them – the mailtown is where the rural round is based. Add a phone number, and allow extra time: rural addresses can take longer, and weekend delivery is limited in many rural areas. The New Zealand Timber Museum in town is a handy landmark if you need to describe a location nearby.
Sending to the district seat too? See Tokoroa.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Putāruru.
