Order flowersRotorua is a lakeside city of about 58,500 people in the Bay of Plenty, known for its geothermal parks and the gardens around the old Bath House. Here is what we have found useful for anyone sending flowers to the city, whether for a birthday, a hospital stay or a funeral.

Government Gardens sit by the lakeshore around the Tudor-style Bath House, which opened in 1908 as the government's first major investment in New Zealand tourism. The Klamath Falls Rose Gardens there are named after Rotorua's sister city in Oregon. The roses bloom from mid-November to June and are at their best in summer. Kuirau Park in the centre of town is another public park, with geothermal features.
At Rotorua Hospital, flowers and plants are not allowed in the intensive care unit because of the infection risk. No rule is published for other wards. Check with the ward before sending, and include the patient's full name and ward on the order.
Rotorua winters are colder than many visitors expect, with an average of 57 ground frosts and about 20 nights below 0 °C a year. Flowers left outside on a winter morning can be damaged. Add the recipient's phone number so the florist can reach them, and choose a time when someone is likely to be home. Our flower care guide explains how to keep a bouquet fresh once it arrives.
The city's cemeteries include Rotorua Cemetery on Sala Street, Kauae Cemetery and the Rotorua Crematorium. Flowers for a funeral are normally sent to the funeral home or the family home. If the farewell is a tangihanga on a marae, our tangihanga guide explains what to bring and what to write, and our sympathy flower guide covers other services. For the lakeside settlement close by, see Ngongotahā.
Many people in the city live around the lake rather than in the centre, so give the full street address, suburb and a phone number. If the address is rural, it will include an RD number; copy it exactly as the recipient writes it, and allow extra time, because rural addresses can take longer. Weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas, so order early in the day if the date matters.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Rotorua.
