Whangārei Hospital welcomes flowers

Whangārei Hospital, formerly Northland Base Hospital, is Northland's largest hospital, with 246 inpatient beds and specialist care for the whole region. That means patients from all over the north may be staying there, not only locals.

Health New Zealand's patient information says flowers will be delivered to the patient as soon as they arrive. To make that easy, put the patient's full name and ward on the order, and a contact number for you as the sender. The city also has a private hospital, Kensington Hospital; we have no published flower rule for it, so check with the hospital first.

Subtropical warmth and what it means for a bouquet

Whangārei has a mild maritime subtropical climate with no real winter cold and plenty of rain spread through the year. Summer days occasionally go above 30°C. Warm, humid weather is hard on cut flowers, so:

  • give the recipient's phone number so the florist can hand the flowers over rather than leave them outside,
  • ask the recipient to trim the stems and change the water every couple of days,
  • consider a potted plant for someone who wants something longer-lasting.

Gardens around the Town Basin

Whangārei Quarry Gardens, at 37A Russell Road in Kensington, is a volunteer-run subtropical garden in a former stone quarry, with native and exotic plants and a scented camellia collection. Entry is by donation. The Hātea Loop walkway links the Town Basin, William Fraser Memorial Park, Te Matau ā Pohe bridge, the Canopy Bridge and Reyburn House gallery. For someone who loves these places, camellias or a lush tropical-style arrangement would suit.

Maunu Cemetery and Crematorium

Whangārei District Council runs Maunu Cemetery and the Maunu Crematorium. When sending flowers for a funeral, address them to the funeral director or venue, include the full name of the person who has died and the date of the service, and keep the card message simple. For a tangihanga, the customs differ; our guide to tangihanga and condolences explains what is appropriate.

Florists in Whangārei also help with orders further afield, for example to Dargaville.
