Sending flowers around Northland

Northland, Te Tai Tokerau, takes in the Kaipara and Far North districts and is home to about 201,100 people (Stats NZ estimate, June 2025). The regional seat is Whangārei, and beyond it the region has many smaller towns and settlements. That makes a little planning worthwhile when you send flowers here, especially to rural addresses.

Towns with their own pages

We have written local guides for the main towns:

  • Whangārei, the regional seat, with a mild maritime subtropical climate and the volunteer-run Whangārei Quarry Gardens.
  • Kerikeri, one of Northland's largest horticultural areas, where grapes and citrus were first planted in 1819.
  • Kaitaia, the last major town before Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach.
  • Dargaville, known locally as the "Kūmara Capital" of New Zealand, and Kaikohe, regarded as the heart of Ngāpuhi and the seat of the Far North District.

Smaller places we also cover

Flowers can also be sent to the many smaller communities across the region, including One Tree Point, Ruakākā, Mangawhai Heads, Waipu, Hikurangi and Ngunguru in the south and east, and Paihia, Russell, Kawakawa and Moerewa around the Bay of Islands. In the far north, Ahipara is also covered. These places do not have their own page yet; use the nearest town page or order with the full street address.

Hospital flowers in Te Tai Tokerau

Northland's hospital pages are friendly towards flowers. Health NZ's page for Whangārei Hospital says flowers will be delivered to the patient as soon as they arrive. Older Northland DHB pages said the same for Kaitaia Hospital and Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa, but as those pages are archived, check with the ward first.

Getting the rural address right

A lot of Northland mail goes to RD (Rural Delivery) addresses. NZ Post's standard is to write the RD number where a suburb would normally go, with no dots or extra spaces: for example "RD 1", not "R.D.1". The mailtown on a rural address is where the delivery round is based, which may not be the nearest village, so copy the address exactly as the recipient uses it.

Rural addresses can take longer, and since June 2024 NZ Post has stopped Saturday parcel deliveries to most rural addresses. Order early in the week if the flowers are going to a farm or lifestyle block.

Warm weather and lasting flowers

Whangārei summer days occasionally go over 30°C, and Kerikeri averages around 24°C in January. In the warmer months, choose flowers that cope with heat and ask the recipient to keep them out of direct sun. Our guide on making flowers last in a Kiwi summer has simple tips.

Florists also deliver to smaller places such as One Tree Point, Ruakākā, Mangawhai Heads, Moerewa, Paihia, Hikurangi, Kawakawa, Waipu, Ahipara, Ngunguru, Russell.
