Order flowersWakefield is a Tasman District village about 25 km southwest of Nelson, with 2,694 people in the town at the 2023 census and another 1,353 in the surrounding Wakefield Rural area. It began in 1843 as Pitfure before being renamed, and it keeps some of New Zealand's oldest institutions: St John's Church, built in 1846, and Wakefield School, set up in 1843 by Mary Ann Baigent, which may be the oldest school in continuous use in the country. Here is what helps when sending flowers to someone in Wakefield.

Wakefield Homestead at 10a Edward Street is the village's aged residential care facility. Nearby aged-care homes in Richmond include:
Write the resident's full name and the home's name on the order. Our Richmond page covers deliveries there. Farm addresses in Wakefield Rural should carry the RD number – rural addresses can take longer.
Nelson Hospital on Tipahi Street, Nelson South, is the region's public hospital, with a 24/7 emergency department. The former Nelson Marlborough DHB visiting policy (archived in December 2023) stated that patients who are immunocompromised, in isolation or in the ICU, HDU, IMCU or SCBU areas should not receive flowers. The current Health NZ page says nothing on flowers, so check with the ward before sending. See our Nelson Hospital page.
St John's Church at 120 Edward Street held its first service on 11 October 1846, before it was even finished, and by 2021 it was described as the longest continuously serving church in New Zealand. Designed by Marianne Reay – considered the first European building in New Zealand designed by a woman – it is built of tōtara, lined with kahikatea and listed as a Heritage New Zealand Category 1 building. Many of the area's early settlers, including Edward Baigent and his wife, are buried in its churchyard, which also holds one Commonwealth war grave from the Second World War.
Tasman District Council manages 12 cemeteries, among them Spring Grove, the mostly rural area between Brightwater and Wakefield; the council notes that some local cemeteries are run by trustees and churches instead. Shone & Shirley Funeral Directors, in business since 1862, have premises at 8B McGlashen Avenue, Richmond, and 164 Tahunanui Drive, Nelson. Ask the family or funeral director where flowers should go, and see our funeral flower guide.
Wakefield's reserves hold some of the last podocarp forest on the Waimea Plains, restored by the Wakefield Bush Restoration Society since 2002. Faulkner Bush Scenic Reserve on the Murchison road has raised boardwalks, wheelchair-accessible routes and a hilltop loop with views over the village. Edward Baigent Memorial Scenic Reserve borders the Wai-iti River, and Wai Iti Recreation Reserve near Wai Iti Bridge holds the Wai Iti Dark Sky Park, set up in 2020, plus a stretch of the Great Taste Cycle Trail.
The Wakefield Country Fete – crafts, local food and live music at Wakefield Village Hall – is held every 2 January and is the region's oldest local craft market, running for more than 45 years. Around New Year, order early: public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas. More towns on our Tasman region page.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Wakefield.
