Order flowersNelson, Whakatū, is a city of about 50,800 people at the top of the South Island. Its nickname is 'Sunny Nelson', and with more than 2,400 sunshine hours a year on average, that is well earned. We have put together what you should know before sending flowers here, whether to a patient, a grieving family or someone celebrating.

Nelson Hospital has advised that flowers are fine on general wards, but that patients who are immunocompromised or in isolation, and patients in ICU, HDU, IMCU and SCBU (the special care baby unit), should not receive flowers. That guidance comes from the former Nelson Marlborough DHB visiting policy, archived in December 2023; the current Health NZ page says nothing about flowers. Check with the ward before sending.
Nelson also has a private hospital, Manuka Street Hospital. We have no flower rule for it, so ring ahead, and put the patient's full name and ward on the order.
Wakapuaka Cemetery on Atawhai Drive dates from 1861 and has more than 16,000 burials. It has the Garin Memorial Chapel, built in 1890, and the Nelson Crematorium, built in 1945. Many local farewells pass through here.
Funeral flowers are usually sent to the funeral home or the family rather than to the cemetery. Our guide to sympathy flowers explains card wording, timing and what to choose.
Nelson City Council keeps several reserves, including the park grounds around Isel House and the Botanical Reserve in the east of the city. Founders Heritage Park recreates historic Nelson as a village of period buildings with well-established gardens. If the person you are sending flowers to is a keen gardener, a potted plant may be a welcome alternative to a bouquet.
All that sun is great for gardens, but a bouquet left on a doorstep in summer will wilt quickly. Put a phone number on the order so the florist can reach the recipient, and mention a shady spot or a neighbour if they may be out. Our flower care guide covers how to make flowers last. For nearby towns such as Richmond and Brightwater, see their own pages.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Nelson.
