Order flowersLincoln – Rīkona – is a university town about 22 km southwest of Christchurch on the Canterbury Plains. With an urban population estimated at 12,100 in June 2025, it is the second-largest town in Selwyn District after Rolleston. It was laid out in 1862 by James Edward FitzGerald and named after the Earl of Lincoln; the grid town is framed by North, East, South and West belts. Lincoln University, founded in 1878, is the oldest agricultural teaching institution in the Southern Hemisphere and the smallest of New Zealand's eight universities.

Graduation is a popular reason to send flowers in a university town. A bouquet waiting at the student's flat or family home on the day, or a bunch handed over after the ceremony, is a classic way to mark years of study. If you are ordering from overseas, give the florist the recipient's phone number so they can arrange a time when the graduate is home. Our guide to graduation flowers by university has more ideas.
The town also hosts research organisations including AgResearch, the Institute for Plant and Food Research, the Foundation for Arable Research and Landcare Research, which together employ over 400 people – a thank-you or farewell bouquet for a colleague can go straight to the workplace, with the person's full name and department.
Lincoln has three schools: Lincoln Primary School (opened 1866), Lincoln High School (opened 1959) and Ararira Springs Primary School (opened 2019). The New Zealand Cricket High Performance Centre is at Lincoln University, and its Bert Sutcliffe Oval and two other grounds host three national tournaments each summer. For a player or coach, flowers are best sent to where they are staying rather than to the ground.
Lincoln is dry: NIWA normals give only about 588 mm of rain a year. January's mean daily maximum is 22.0 °C, but the record high is 40.4 °C, and July nights average 1.6 °C. On a hot day, a bouquet left on a doorstep will suffer, so ask for a handover in person and put a phone number on the order. Our flower care guide has tips for keeping flowers fresh.
We have no hospital listed in Lincoln itself. If the person you are thinking of is in hospital in Christchurch, note that Health New Zealand states flowers are not permitted in the wards or other areas of Christchurch Hospital or Christchurch Women's Hospital. The former Canterbury DHB has also advised that flowers and potted plants are not allowed in its community maternity units, including Selwyn. For a new baby or a patient, flowers to the home are the reliable choice.
The nearest residential care home on our list is Bupa Ashford Care Home at 8 Brunel Road in Prebbleton. Lincoln Cemetery is run by Selwyn District Council; for a funeral, send flowers to the funeral director or venue rather than the cemetery.
If the address is out on the plains, check it carefully. Rural addresses carry an RD number where a suburb would normally appear, written like "RD 1" with no dots, and the mailtown is where the rural round is based – not necessarily Lincoln. Copy the address exactly as the recipient writes it and add a phone number. Rural addresses can take longer, and weekend delivery is limited in many rural areas. Sending to a neighbouring town too? See our page for Prebbleton.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Lincoln.
