Ellesmere Hospital: care for older people
Leeston's hospital is for the elderly only. Ellesmere Hospital at 25 Cunningham Street provides rest home, hospital, dementia and psychogeriatric care. There is no facility-specific flower rule. The former Canterbury DHB has stated, in a district-wide FAQ last updated in June 2022, that flowers are not possible in some hospital areas and asked people to check first. Check with the ward before sending, and include the resident's full name.
Abbeyfield Ellesmere
Abbeyfield Ellesmere at 33 Flannery Street opened in 2018 with 14 studio units for older people, each with its own patio and garden space. Residents with a bit of garden may enjoy a potted plant as much as a bouquet. Give the resident's name and studio number on the order.
Show day in October
The Ellesmere A&P Show is held every year at the Leeston Agricultural and Pastoral Showgrounds; the 2026 show was on Saturday 17 October. Spring is a good time for flowers here, and our seasonal flower calendar shows what is at its best. Harts Creek, a spring-fed creek and wildlife reserve about seven minutes from town, is a favourite spot for walks, picnics and bird watching.
