Sending flowers to Ellesmere Community Facility

Ellesmere Community Facility, at 25 Cunningham Street in Leeston, provides hospital-level aged care, respite care, end of life care and palliative care. Flowers can bring real comfort to residents and families here. The facility has not published a flower rule, so we have set out the older district guidance and what we suggest.

Check with the ward first

No facility-specific rule. The former Canterbury DHB district-wide FAQ (archived, last updated 8 June 2022) says flowers are not possible in some hospital areas and asks people to check first; its ward ban list covers Christchurch, Christchurch Women's, Burwood and the community maternity units, not this facility. Check with the ward before sending.

“It is not possible to have flowers in some hospital areas. If you are thinking of purchasing flowers please ask the hospital volunteers in the gift shop first. Gift shops also sell flower vouchers, for flowers to be delivered when the patient goes home.”

District guidance from 2022

The former Canterbury DHB's FAQ, archived from a page last updated in June 2022, has advised: "It is not possible to have flowers in some hospital areas. If you are thinking of purchasing flowers please ask the hospital volunteers in the gift shop first. Gift shops also sell flower vouchers, for flowers to be delivered when the patient goes home."

The wards it listed as flower-free were at Christchurch Hospital, Christchurch Women's Hospital, Burwood and the community maternity units, not Ellesmere. As the advice is old and covers the whole district, check with the ward before sending. The facility's number is 03 324 3415.

When to visit Ellesmere Community Facility

Visiting hours are 10am to 8.30pm, unless arranged before. It is best to avoid visiting at meal times. If you are bringing flowers, mid-morning or mid-afternoon is a good time to arrive and ask staff where to place them.

Flowers for palliative care

For someone receiving palliative or end of life care, small, softly scented flowers are usually kinder than a large or strongly perfumed bouquet. Ask the family or nurses what the person likes. Our guide to funeral and sympathy flowers includes gentle ideas for cards at difficult times.

Thanking the staff

The same archived Canterbury page has stated that flowers cannot be delivered to staff during work, and that staff collect deliveries at the end of their shift. A card for the team is often the simplest thank-you.

Delivery around Leeston

For flowers to a home, see flower delivery in Leeston. Rural Selwyn addresses with an RD number can take longer. Darfield Community Facility is the other Selwyn facility we cover.

Parking and visiting rules

Health NZ says there are car parks on site, including accessible parks. Multiple visitors are allowed except in shared rooms. Visitors are asked to wear a surgical or medical mask and to use the hand sanitiser provided. Arrangements outside the 10am to 8:30pm hours are possible if made beforehand.

Referral and emergencies

This is a referral-only facility with no emergency department. People cannot refer themselves, and a referral comes from the patient's GP.

After hours, the nearest urgent medical centre listed is 24 Hour Surgery at 401 Madras Street, Christchurch (03 365 7777). For emergencies call 111, and for non-urgent health advice call Healthline on 0800 611 116. Health NZ also notes free public Wi-Fi in most hospital areas.

Home addresses nearby are covered on our Leeston flower delivery page.
