Sending flowers to Hillmorton Hospital
Hillmorton Hospital, on Annex Road South in Middleton, Christchurch, provides mental health services for Canterbury. There is no published flower rule for Hillmorton itself. What we do have is an old district-wide note from the former Canterbury District Health Board, which applied to all of its hospitals.
Order by 2 pm on weekdays (11 am Saturdays) for same-day delivery in many areas
- Ward rules quoted from the hospital
- Name and ward on the card
- Local florists deliver the flowers

No facility-specific rule. The former Canterbury DHB district-wide FAQ (archived, last updated 8 June 2022) says flowers are not possible in some hospital areas and asks people to check first; its ward ban list covers Christchurch, Christchurch Women's, Burwood and the community maternity units, not this facility. Check with the ward before sending.
“It is not possible to have flowers in some hospital areas. If you are thinking of purchasing flowers please ask the hospital volunteers in the gift shop first. Gift shops also sell flower vouchers, for flowers to be delivered when the patient goes home.”
The district-wide guidance
The archived Canterbury DHB page (last updated June 2022) has advised: "It is not possible to have flowers in some hospital areas. If you are thinking of purchasing flowers please ask the hospital volunteers in the gift shop first. Gift shops also sell flower vouchers, for flowers to be delivered when the patient goes home."
Its list of banned wards named Christchurch Hospital, Christchurch Women's Hospital, Burwood and the community maternity units, not Hillmorton. Because this is an old, district-wide page rather than a Hillmorton rule, check with the ward before sending.
Flowers for staff
The same archived page has stated that it is not possible to deliver flowers to staff during work, and that staff must collect their flower delivery at the end of their shift on their way home. If you want to thank a nurse or support worker, sending flowers to their home is the simpler option.
Thoughtful alternatives
- A card or letter that the person can keep.
- Flowers delivered to their home ready for when they leave hospital.
- Something simple brought during a visit, once you have checked with staff.
For home deliveries across the city see Christchurch flower delivery. You can compare the rules at Burwood Hospital, which publishes a ward list.
Visiting Hillmorton
Visiting hours are 10am to 8pm daily, with some exceptions. The phone number listed for the hospital is 03 337 7969.
What Hillmorton looks after
Health NZ lists these major services at Hillmorton:
- addiction services
- adult and child mental health
- eating disorders
- forensic mental health
- perinatal mental health
- physiotherapy
If a flower delivery is not suitable on the ward, an arrangement sent to the person's address afterwards is a gentle option. See flower delivery in Christchurch.
Getting there and finding the way

The grounds are smokefree. A 24-hour interpreter service is available for non-English speakers, deaf people and New Zealand Sign Language users, free of charge.
Cafe and family space
The Kanuka Hillmorton cafe in the Fergusson building is open 8:30am to 3pm on weekdays, with hot and cold cabinet-style food and coffee, and there are vending machines. Whānau rooms are available for larger visitor groups, and chaplains are available around the clock. Specific units have different visiting recommendations, so call ahead to find the best time.
