Order flowersKaiapoi lies about 17 km north of central Christchurch, near the mouth of the Waimakariri River, and had about 13,700 residents in June 2025. It is part of the Waimakariri District in Canterbury, takes its name from the nearby Kaiapoi Pā, and is known as the 'River Town' after the Kaiapoi River that runs through the centre. That river was originally the main arm of the Waimakariri and was renamed in 1959.

Kaiapoi was badly hit by the 2010 Canterbury earthquake: more than 900 homes in Kaiapoi and nearby The Pines Beach were abandoned because of land damage, so if you are using an address from before then, check it with the recipient first. Earlier, the town was known for its woollen mill, which ran from the late 1870s until the 1970s, and a freezing works that closed in 1991.
Trousselot Park on Charles Street, on the riverbank, has a skate park, play areas and a 1908 band rotunda that is a Category 2 historic place.
St Bartholomew's, a wooden church built to plans by Benjamin Mountfort, opened in 1856 and is the oldest surviving church in Canterbury. Waimakariri District Council runs Kaiapoi Public Cemetery on Adderley Terrace; the Kaiapoi Anglican Cemetery, on the corner of Parnham Lane and Vickery Street, is now only open for ashes burials and second interments in reserved plots.
The council's cemeteries fact sheet says you are welcome to leave cut flowers at the graveside, but warns that the wind may disturb large arrangements. Tributes should be kept clear of the grass and the mowers, and live plantings are removed. A modest, low bunch is the practical choice for a grave visit. For the funeral itself, send flowers to the funeral director or service venue with the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service – our funeral flower etiquette guide helps with card wording.
Residential care homes in Kaiapoi include Annaliese Haven Rest Home & Hospital at 25 Adderley Terrace and Kaiapoi Lifecare at 6 Cass Street, on the corner of Smith Street. For a resident, give the full name and the name of the home, and choose a compact arrangement in a vase. If the person is unwell, check with the staff before sending.
We have no hospital listed in Kaiapoi itself, and the rules at the hospitals in neighbouring towns are strict.
In both cases, sending flowers to the person's home in Kaiapoi once they are back is the reliable option.
Sending to a neighbouring town as well? See our pages for Woodend.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Kaiapoi.
