St Barnabas and the town's churches

St Barnabas, the Woodend-Pegasus Anglican parish church, was designed by architect Cecil Wood and opened in June 1933, replacing a church built in 1859–60. Woodend Methodist Church was built in 1911 and repaired after the 2010–2011 Christchurch earthquakes. Church flowers for a wedding, christening or anniversary service are best arranged with the parish first, so the florist knows when and where to deliver.

Three cemeteries, one closed

  • St Barnabas Anglican Cemetery, 143 Main North Road, still has burial plots available. Its lych gate was built in 1903 in memory of the Gresson family.
  • Woodend Methodist Cemetery is closed for burials.
  • The nearest Waimakariri District Council cemeteries are Kaiapoi Public Cemetery (Adderley Terrace and Island Road) and Rangiora Park Lawn Cemetery (East Belt and Coldstream Road).

For a funeral, send flowers to the funeral director or service venue rather than the cemetery, with the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service. Our funeral flower etiquette guide helps with wording.

Retirement home residents

Bloomfield Court Retirement Home at 134 Rangiora Woodend Road provides aged residential care. For a resident, a small arrangement in a vase is easiest for staff to manage. Include the resident's full name and check with the home if they are unwell.

New babies and hospital stays

We have no hospital listed in Woodend. In neighbouring Rangiora, the only inpatient unit at the Rangiora Health Hub is a maternity unit, and the former Canterbury DHB has advised that flowers and potted plants are not allowed in the Rangiora community maternity unit. In Christchurch, flowers are not permitted in the wards of Christchurch Hospital or Christchurch Women's Hospital. In both cases, flowers to the family home are the better choice.

Weather and delivery

January and February are Woodend's warmest months, with an average high of 23°C; July is the coldest (average high 11°C) and wettest, at about 63 mm. Add a phone number to your order so the florist can hand the flowers over rather than leave them outside. Near the coast, Tūhaitara Coastal Park by Woodend Beach is known for walking and mountain-bike trails. Sending to Kaiapoi too? See our page.
