Voguehaven on Main Road

Voguehaven Rest Home at 145 Main Road, Clive, offers rest home, hospital, dementia and psychogeriatric care, and lists palliative care among its areas of expertise. For a resident, include their full name and the home's name, and choose a compact arrangement that suits a small room – a posy or a potted plant is easier for staff than a tall vase.

Omahu Road hospital and Orchard Road crematorium

The nearest hospital is Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital at 398 Omahu Road, Hastings. Its intensive care page says "Do not bring flowers"; no rule is published for other wards, so check with the ward before sending. See our hospital page.

The Hastings Cemetery at 202 Orchard Road contains the Hawke's Bay Crematorium & Chapel, operated by Hastings District Council; a new chapel and crematorium opened there in 2018. New burial plots are available at Hastings, Mangaroa and Puketapu cemeteries. If you plan to leave flowers at a grave, note that the council bylaw prohibits decorative items such as glass or pottery jars and vases that could be a safety hazard, and planting needs approval – a wreath or loose bouquet is the safer choice. For the city itself, see our Hastings page.

Kohupātiki and Matahiwi marae

Clive has two marae: Kohupātiki Marae (Tanenuiarangi meeting house) and Matahiwi Marae (Te Matau a Māui meeting house), both Ngāti Kahungunu; both were among 18 marae that shared $6,020,910 of Provincial Growth Fund upgrade money in 2020. If a loss is being marked at a marae, ask the whānau what is appropriate before sending flowers; our tangihanga guide explains the basics.

Farndon Park and the first-weekend regatta

Farndon Park Domain, entered off Farndon Road on the banks of the river, is one of the oldest recreation grounds in Hawke's Bay. The colonial government bought the land in 1870 meaning to turn it into botanical gardens; instead it hosted the first New Zealand Tennis Championships in December 1885, and today it is home to the Hawke's Bay Rowing Club, Clive's rugby and tennis clubs, waka ama crews and a swimming pool open year round.

The Hawke's Bay Rowing Regatta, held on the river on the first weekend of the year, dates from 1872. That weekend falls in the New Year holiday period, when delivery is limited in many areas – order early. The river, now called Te Awa o Mokotūāraro, is 33 km long and occupies the former course of the Ngaruroro River, which shifted in the 1867 floods. More towns on our Hawke's Bay region page.
