Sending flowers to Bulls (Pūru)

Bulls, Pūru, sits at the junction of State Highways 1 and 3, 28 km north-west of Palmerston North. It started out as Bull Town, named after James Bull, who owned the first general store; it was renamed Clifton and then changed back to Bulls at the urging of Sir William Fox. Local marketing still puns on the name, with signs such as 'Const-a-bull' at the police station. At the 2023 census it had 2,055 residents and a young median age of 32.8.

Ohakea air base families

Many personnel from RNZAF Base Ohakea, opened in 1939, live in Bulls. Around 1,200 military personnel are based there – New Zealand's second-largest Air Force base – with squadrons flying helicopters, P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and training aircraft. Flowers for a homecoming, a posting or a new baby are best sent to the home address in Bulls; give the recipient's phone number in case they are on shift.

Clifton Cemetery and Parewahawaha Marae

Bulls' public cemetery is Clifton Cemetery at the end of Watson Street – the first corner on the left in the 50 km area as you head south into town on State Highway 1. It is one of eight public cemeteries run by Rangitīkei District Council, along with Mt View in Marton. Parewahawaha Marae, on land known as Ōhinepuhiawe, is a meeting ground for the Ngāti Raukawa hapū Ngāti Parewahawaha; its meeting house was opened in 1967 by the Māori Queen Te Atairangikaahu. Our tangihanga guide and sympathy flower guide explain what to send.

Palmerston North Hospital, Marton and Feilding rest homes

The nearest hospital is Palmerston North Hospital, at 50 Ruahine Street, Roslyn, with a 24-hour emergency department. Most of its wards are flower free, so check with the ward before sending or bringing flowers; a delivery to the patient's home in Bulls after discharge is often the better choice.

Eldernet lists only one residential aged-care home in the Rangitīkei District: Edale Masonic Care at 30 Bond Street in Marton. Across the Manawatū District line, all eight homes it lists are in Feilding. Use the home's address and the resident's full name.

Warm Januaries on the Rangitīkei farmland

Bulls sits in a fertile farming area and gets about 863.8 mm of rain a year and a mean January maximum of 22.3 °C. A bouquet left on a sunny step will wilt fast in summer, so ask for it to be handed over or left in the shade. Many recipients have RD addresses: write 'RD' and the number without dots, then the mailtown and postcode, exactly as the recipient does. Rural addresses can take longer, and NZ Post stopped Saturday parcel deliveries to most rural addresses in 2024.
