Sending flowers to Whanganui

Whanganui is a river city of about 42,800 people on the west coast of the North Island. It is a gardening town at heart, with a conservatory on St John's Hill and one of the country's best public orchid collections just out of town. Here is what we have gathered for anyone sending flowers to Whanganui.

Orchids, camellias and a winter garden

Two gardens show what locals enjoy:

  • Rotokawau Virginia Lake on St John's Hill has a fountain, an Art Deco conservatory and a winter garden.
  • Bason Botanic Gardens, about 8 km northwest of the city, were created in 1966 from a farm gifted by Stanley and Blanche Bason. They cover 25 hectares and hold one of the country's most extensive public-garden orchid collections, plus camellias, magnolias and roses.

A potted orchid can make a lovely gift for someone in Whanganui, and it lasts far longer than cut flowers. Our seasonal flower calendar shows what is at its best each month.

Whanganui Hospital and Belverdale

The city has a public hospital, Whanganui Hospital, and a private one, Belverdale Hospital. We have not found a published flower rule for either. Many hospitals in New Zealand limit flowers in intensive care and some other wards, so ring the ward before ordering, and include the patient's full name and ward on the order. If they are well enough to go home soon, flowers sent to the house may be the better choice.

A mild climate for flowers

Whanganui has about 2,100 sunshine hours a year and only occasional light winter frosts. That makes it kinder to doorstep deliveries than many inland towns, but a bouquet in summer sun still wilts, so add a phone number so the florist can reach the recipient. Our flower care guide has more tips.

Addresses outside the city

Some Whanganui addresses are rural and use an RD number, written as 'RD 1' with no dots or extra spaces, followed by the mailtown and postcode. Copy the address exactly as the recipient gives it. NZ Post stopped Saturday parcel deliveries to most rural addresses in 2024, and weekend delivery to rural addresses is limited in many areas, so order for a weekday if you can. For other towns in the area, see our Manawatū-Whanganui region page.
