Flowers for someone in Pahiatua

Pahiatua is a Tararua District town in the Manawatū-Whanganui region, 30 km east of Palmerston North and 60 km north of Masterton. About 2,830 people live in the urban area (June 2025 estimate). Its Main Street is unusually wide: it was planned for a railway down the centre, and the reserve became a grassed median. In November 1944 a camp about 2 km south of town received 838 Polish refugees, 733 of them children. Here is our guide to sending flowers to Pahiatua.

Hospital care is in Palmerston North

Pahiatua's own hospital, open from 1902, closed in 1998, and hospital-level care is now provided at Palmerston North Hospital. Its patient information brochure says most wards are flower free and asks people to check before sending or bringing in flowers. So check with the ward before sending – or plan a bouquet for the patient's return home to Pahiatua.

Waireka Lifecare

Waireka Lifecare at 11 Halls Road is Ministry of Health certified for rest home and hospital-level care and also offers dementia care. In 2023 Waireka, then in operation for about 40 years, was bought by New Zealand Aged Care Services. It is the only aged care provider in Pahiatua and takes residents from both Pahiatua and Woodville. For a resident, a compact arrangement in a vase is easiest for staff; include the resident's full name. Our guide to hay fever and flowers suggests lower-pollen choices.

Mangatainoka Cemetery and rural burial grounds

Tararua District Council lists Mangatainoka Cemetery on Cemetery Road, Mangatainoka, as the main cemetery serving Pahiatua. It lies about 5 km north of town, down a signposted side road just before Mangatainoka. The smaller Mangahao-Ballance Cemetery on Ballance Road is run by the Mangahao Cemetery Trust.

For a funeral, send flowers to the funeral director or the service venue with the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service. Pahiatua Marae, with the meeting house Te Kohanga Whakawhaiti, is a meeting place for Rangitāne (Ngāti Hāmua and Te Kapuārangi); for a tangihanga, see our guide to tangihanga and condolences.

Rainfall and rural addresses

Average annual rainfall in Pahiatua is about 1,450 mm (NIWA, 1981–2010), so ask for flowers to be handed over rather than left outside. For farm properties, use the RD number exactly as the recipient writes it, add a phone number, and allow extra time – rural addresses can take longer, and weekend delivery is limited in many rural areas.
