Flowers for someone in Timaru

Timaru – Te Tihi-o-Maru – is a town of about 29,300 people that takes its roses seriously. It has two five-star gardens, one of them devoted to species roses, and a hospital that says plainly how it handles flowers. Here is what we have gathered to help your order.

Two five-star gardens for rose lovers

Timaru Botanic Gardens at 35 Queen Street were first laid out in 1864. They are rated five stars by the New Zealand Gardens Trust and are open daily from 8am until dusk with free entry. Their species rose collection, planted in 1989 with more added in 1992, represents 57 of the world's roughly 100–150 species roses.

Down by the sea, the Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden at Caroline Bay opened in December 2001 and holds about 1,150 roses, including old and English roses. It is also rated five stars and free to visit. For many Timaru recipients, a rose bouquet will feel close to home.

Summer at Caroline Bay

The Caroline Bay Carnival runs every year from Boxing Day to mid-January at Caroline Bay Park, so the holiday weeks are busy in town. Timaru has a relatively dry temperate climate, but its recorded extremes – 41.3 °C in February 2011 and −9.1 °C in August 1998 – show it can swing hard both ways.

  • In a hot spell, ask for flowers to go to an address where someone is home to put them in water.
  • Around Christmas and New Year, order early; weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas.
