Order flowersTe Anau is a Southland District town of about 2,920 people beside Lake Te Anau – the largest lake in the South Island and second in New Zealand only to Lake Taupō. It is the entry point to Fiordland, and a long way from the cities: 155 km north of Invercargill and 171 km south-west of Queenstown via State Highway 6. That distance is the main thing to plan around.

With the nearest cities well over 100 km away, give yourself time. Order early in the week, avoid relying on weekend delivery (which is limited in many areas), and put the recipient's phone number on the order. Rural addresses (RD numbers) around the town can take longer.
Te Anau averages a daily high of 20.0 °C in January and only 8.4 °C in July, with about 1,202.5 mm of rain a year. Cool conditions are kind to cut flowers, but a wet doorstep is not – add a note about a sheltered spot or a neighbour who can take the delivery. Our flower care guide helps them last.
Fiordland Medical Practice, the town's general practice, is at Fiordland Medical Centre, 25 Luxmore Drive. Healthpoint lists no aged residential care homes in Te Anau. The region's main hospital is Southland Hospital in Kew, Invercargill, about 155 km away, with a 24-hour emergency department. Fresh flowers are not allowed in its ICU, HDU, oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, surgical and medical wards, or in multi-bed rooms, so check with the ward before sending. Details are on our Southland Hospital page and our Invercargill page.
Te Anau's cemetery, Lynwood Cemetery, is at 229 Whitestone Road and is administered by Southland District Council. For a funeral, ask the family or funeral director where flowers should go; often it is the family home.
Te Anau hosts the Kepler Challenge mountain run in early December each year – congratulations flowers for a finisher are best sent to their home or accommodation afterwards. The Kepler Track (a four-day loop), the Milford Track and the Routeburn Track are all Great Walks in the region. The township was first surveyed in 1893 and grew after the Homer Tunnel opened in 1953. Fiordland College (Years 7–13) and Te Anau School, opened in 1937, are its schools.
The Te Anau Bird Sanctuary (Punanga Manu o Te Anau) on the southern shore has takahē, kākā and whio (blue duck), and the Te Ana-au glowworm caves lie across the lake; the name comes from Te Ana-au, which can be translated as 'the swirling cave'. More towns are on our Southland region page.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Te Anau.
