Invercargill's Queens Park
Invercargill's Queens Park was part of the original plan for the city in 1856. It is rated a five-star garden, with modern and old-fashioned roses, Japanese and Chinese gardens, a rhododendron dell and an azalea garden. Invercargill is also New Zealand's second-windiest city and narrowly its cloudiest, so a bright bunch on the table is always welcome.
Flowers for Southland Hospital patients
Southland Hospital in Kew does not allow fresh flowers in intensive care, high dependency, oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, surgical or medical wards, or in multi-bed rooms. Check with ward reception before sending. The hospital has a gift shop in the ground-floor foyer, open 10am to 4pm daily.
Gore, Winton and the farming towns
Gore, 64 km north-east of Invercargill, has hosted the Gold Guitar Awards every year since 1974. Winton, 30 km north of the city, is warmer, drier and calmer than the coast, and dairy farming is the staple of the district; the Winton A&P Show is held at the end of January. Mataura, Bluff and Riverton / Aparima are also served, using the full street address. For sympathy flowers in Winton, the newer East Winton Cemetery on Devereux Road accepts new burials; send funeral flowers to the funeral director or the family's home.
Te Anau and Fiordland
Te Anau is 155 km north of Invercargill and 171 km south-west of Queenstown. Lake Te Anau is the largest lake in the South Island. Because of the distances, order early in the day and early in the week, and remember that weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas.
Stewart Island / Rakiura
Stewart Island had 486 residents at the 2023 census, and Oban is its only town. It is reached by a ferry from Bluff that takes about an hour, or by flights from Invercargill Airport to Ryan's Creek Aerodrome above Oban. Anything sent there, flowers included, has to cross the water first, so allow extra time and see our Stewart Island page.
Rural Southland addresses
Rural properties use RD addresses, with "RD" and a number where the suburb would go. NZ Post leaves parcels at the roadside mailbox if a house is more than half a kilometre away, so a phone number or delivery note helps the florist find the door.
Florists also deliver to smaller places such as Bluff, Riverton / Aparima, Mataura.
