Order flowersWaitara is a town on the Waitara River, about 15 km northeast of New Plymouth in the Taranaki region. Around 7,720 people live in the urban area (June 2025 estimate), and the town is part of New Plymouth District. It was where the Taranaki Wars broke out in 1860; for a time the town was known as Raleigh, and the name reverted to Waitara when it became a borough in 1904. Today two methanol plants, Waitara Valley and Motunui, are its most important industry. Here is our practical guide to sending flowers to Waitara.

The Waitara Heritage Trail is an easy 1.7 km walk along the river from West Quay in the town centre to Marine Park near the river mouth. Along the way are ten carved panels on the boardwalk representing Waitara's flora and fauna, and a Rose Garden commemorating Bob Donaldson for his long service as a borough councillor.
Spring is garden season across the region: the Centuria Taranaki Garden Festival opens gardens from 30 October to 8 November 2026. If someone in Waitara is opening their garden, volunteering or hosting visitors, flowers or a plant make a warm thank-you. Farming around the town even includes tree and shrub nurseries alongside dairy, beef, sheep and kiwifruit. Our guide to flowers in season in New Zealand shows what is at its best.
Waitara Cemetery on Bayly Street opened in 1885 and is run by the New Plymouth District Council. The council says floral tributes are permitted only on memorial headstone bases; vase inserts may be provided in some cremation areas, and no flowers or shrubs may be planted in lawn cemeteries. For a grave visit, a compact arrangement that sits neatly on a headstone base works best.
For a funeral, send flowers to the funeral director or the venue rather than to the cemetery itself, and include the full name of the person who has died plus the date and time of the service. Our funeral flower etiquette guide can help with the card.
Waitara has two marae: Kairau Marae, with the Te Hungaririki meeting house, is a meeting ground for the Pukerangiora hapū of Te Āti Awa; Ōwae or Manukorihi Marae has the Te Ikaroa a Māui meeting house. If you are sending condolences to a tangihanga, the customs differ from a funeral home service – our guide to tangihanga and condolences explains what is appropriate.
Residential care homes in Waitara include Kohatu Rest Home at 35B Nelson Street and Norfolk Lodge Resthome at 30 Princess Street. For a resident, give the full name and the name of the home, and choose a small arrangement already in a vase.
We have no hospital listed in Waitara itself. The public hospital in neighbouring New Plymouth is Taranaki Base Hospital. We have not found a published flower rule for it, so check with the ward before sending, and give the patient's full name and ward on the order. If the person is due home soon, flowers to their Waitara address avoid a missed delivery.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Waitara.
