Order flowersŌhope sits between Ōhiwa Harbour and Ōhope Beach, six kilometres east of Whakatāne in the Bay of Plenty. Ōhope Beach was voted New Zealand's most loved beach in 2014 in an Automobile Association social media campaign. About 3,070 people live in the urban area (June 2025 estimate). The settlement was officially Ohope Beach until 1974, and since 21 June 2019 its official name has been Ōhope, with a macron.

Valentine’s in a Kiwi summer

Sunny stems for a recovery
Port Ōhope Wharf on Ōhiwa Harbour serves the eastern end of town, and the Ōhope Harbourside Trail and Ōhope Scenic Reserve track are popular walks. The harbour itself is a drowned valley with six islands and large areas of seagrass, and North Island brown kiwi live in reserves on its shores – the Whakatane Kiwi Project has raised or released more than 300 chicks there. Onekawa Te Mawhai Regional Park is on the harbour's northeastern shores.
At the other end of town, West End is popular for surfing in summer and over Christmas – Ōhope is a summer holiday destination. If your recipient is staying at a bach or holiday park rather than at home, give the exact address and their phone number.
NIWA records for Port Ohope show about 2,261 sunshine hours a year, with December and January the sunniest months. Average temperatures run from about 23.8 °C in January (24.3 °C in February) to 14.9 °C in July, with around 1,000 mm of rain a year. Summer sun dries out a bouquet left on a deck, so ask for a handover in person and suggest the flowers go into water straight away. Our flower care guide has more tips.
Ōhope is linked to Whakatāne by Ōhope Road, a two-lane route with passing lanes on the hill, and by the Baybus 122 route.
Ōhope has no hospital. Whakatāne Hospital, on Stewart Street in Whakatāne (corner of Garaway Street), is the Health New Zealand public hospital for the Eastern Bay of Plenty, about 6 km away. Health New Zealand says you can send mail and flowers directly to the wards throughout the day – include the patient's full name and, if you know it, the ward.
Ohope Beach Care at 4 Harbour Road is a residential aged care facility in Ōhope itself, offering rest home and dementia care. In neighbouring Whakatāne, residential care homes include Golden Pond Private Hospital (47 Bracken Street), Bupa Mary Shapley Care Home (4 Spence Lane) and Sheaffs Rest Home (17 Landing Road). For a resident, choose a compact arrangement in a vase and include their full name.
Hillcrest Cemetery and Crematorium lies on Ōhope Road between Whakatāne and Ōhope. The crematorium opened in 2009 with a 50-seat waka-themed chapel, and Whakatāne District Council has a certified natural burial area at the cemetery. A funeral service in Whakatāne is also certified by Natural Burials. For a natural burial, ask the family whether they would prefer flowers that are loose, unwrapped or locally grown. Our funeral flower etiquette guide covers the card.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Ōhope.
