Flowers are restricted in some areas

Fresh flowers are not allowed in ICU, HDU, oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, surgical or medical wards, or in multi-bed rooms (risk to patients with respiratory disorders). Check with ward reception before using a florist.

“Due to the risk that fresh flowers pose to patients with respiratory disorders, you cannot bring them into the following areas: intensive care unit, high dependency unit, oncology ward, cardiovascular ward, respiratory ward, surgical ward, medical ward, multi-bed rooms. If you are bringing flowers in or using florist delivery services, check with the ward reception.”

The Southern district flower list

Health NZ's page states that, because of the risk fresh flowers pose to patients with respiratory disorders, you cannot bring them into these areas:

  • intensive care unit
  • high dependency unit
  • oncology ward
  • cardiovascular ward
  • respiratory ward
  • surgical ward
  • medical ward
  • multi-bed rooms

The rule for multi-bed rooms and for surgical and medical wards affects many patients, so do not assume a bouquet will reach the bedside.

Ring reception before ordering

The hospital asks anyone bringing flowers in or using a florist delivery to check with the ward reception first. Check with the ward before sending; the hospital's phone number is 03 441 0015.

Sending from overseas or out of town

  • Ask the ward whether flowers are fine for the patient before you order.
  • If they are not, consider a card, or flowers to the hotel or home address once the person is discharged.
  • Order early in the day, and remember that weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas.

A short message in the card, with your name and where you are writing from, means a lot to someone far from home. Our Queenstown flower delivery page covers the town and nearby Arrowtown.

Visiting hours at Lakes District Hospital

Visiting hours at Lakes District Hospital are 11am to 6pm daily. Plan any visit with flowers in hand around that window.

If you are visiting in person, ask the staff at the ward before you take flowers to the bedside. They can tell you straight away whether the patient is in a shared room or an area where flowers are not allowed. If the answer is no, take the flowers home with you or leave them for the patient's family to collect, rather than leaving them at reception.

Entrances and parking

The main entrance is at 20 Douglas Street, Frankton, with free car parking on Douglas Street. The emergency entrance is on Lucas Place, signed and accessible 24/7 with a drop-off bay. For the maternity ward, use the main entrance until 6pm, and the unit's side entrance after hours.

Wards and services

Health NZ lists a 24-hour emergency department, a primary birthing unit for complication-free pregnancies, maternity services, mental health and addiction services, cardiothoracic surgery and district nursing. Several of the wards in the flower list, such as surgical, medical and cardiovascular, sit alongside these, which is why checking with ward reception matters so much.

Visitor numbers

Visitor numbers may be limited for infection control, and the hospital asks you to keep to one or two people when possible. For compassionate reasons, or if you are accompanying children, ask the charge nurse. The hospital and grounds are smoke and vape free, and a 24-hour interpreter service covers more than 55 languages, including New Zealand Sign Language.
