Flowers for Golden Bay Community Health Centre

Golden Bay Community Health Centre, at 10 Central Tākaka Road in Tākaka, is the rural health centre for Golden Bay. It has no published flower rule of its own. The only guidance we found is the district-wide visiting policy of the former Nelson Marlborough DHB, which covered all its hospitals.

Check with the ward first

The former Nelson Marlborough DHB district-wide visiting policy (archived Dec 2023) says immunocompromised or isolated patients (and ICU/HDU/IMCU/SCBU patients) should not receive flowers. No facility-specific rule; check with staff whether the patient may receive flowers.

“Gifts, Flowers and Personal items Personal items such as books, pens, and toiletries can be brought in but must not be shared with other patients, whānau or staff. Patients who are immunocompromised, in isolation or in our ICU/HDU/IMCU/SCBU areas should not receive flowers.”

What the district policy said

In its policy as archived in December 2023, the DHB has stated that "Patients who are immunocompromised, in isolation or in our ICU/HDU/IMCU/SCBU areas should not receive flowers." The parts about isolation and weakened immune systems can apply to any patient.

Because this is old, district-wide wording rather than a rule for the centre, check with the ward before sending. The centre's number is 03 525 0060. Have the patient's full name ready when you call, and ask whether a small arrangement or a card would suit them best.

Visiting

Health NZ does not list visiting hours for the centre. The archived district policy, which still had COVID-era wording, gave visiting hours of 2:30pm to 8pm for Nelson Marlborough facilities, but please confirm by phone rather than relying on that.

Getting flowers to Golden Bay

For a rural health centre, give the florist plenty of notice. Order early in the day, and remember that weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas. Rural addresses with an RD number can take longer than an address in the township.

If flowers are not suitable at the centre, ask whether the patient would like them at home instead. Our Tasman region page lists the towns we cover, including Tākaka.

If the patient is moved

If the person has been moved to Nelson Hospital, the same old district policy applies there. Check where the person is before you send anything, so the bouquet does not arrive after they have left.

What the centre provides

Health NZ lists short stay and flexicare, district nursing, public health nursing, Well Child | Tamariki Ora, maternity care and primary maternity facility services, allied health services, Meals on Wheels, support to the Mobile Surgical Unit | Te Waka Hauora, and aged residential care.

Patients may be in for very different reasons, so ask the staff which area the person is in before sending anything.

Opening hours and urgent care

General open hours are 8:30am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday. After-hours drop-in clinics run from 10am to 1pm on Saturdays and public holidays, with no Sunday service. For critical emergencies call 111. For urgent issues that are not life-threatening, call the centre on 03 525 0060 at any time to speak with a registered nurse.

Getting around Golden Bay

Wrinklies Express is a member-only health shuttle taking people aged 50 and over, or people with a disability, to medical appointments. Its number is 03 525 9775.
